SOLVENT BASED PAINTS
Sandtex Gloss Finish

Sandtex Gloss Finish is an alkyd- based paint, highly pigmented to give a good protective and decorative finish.

A. PAINTING OF NEW WOODWORK

Preparation of surface to be painted

All joinery be plain and rubbed down with waterproof glass paper to an even smooth surface. All excess glue should be removed and nails counter-sunk. After priming, rub down with glass paper to remove any grain, and then fill nail holes, cracks, etc, with recommended filler. Allow to dry and sand down flat.

•  PREPARATION OF PAINTS

Skin should be removed completely and paint well stirred till it is of homogenous consistency.

•  SURROUNDING CONDITIONS

The woodwork must be clean and dry, the atmosphere dry and good ventilation provided. It is important to clear away all sawdust and sandy debris as this easily settles on wet painted surfaces, which mars the gloss.

•  NORMAL METHODS OF APPLICATION
In all methods the paint should be applied in a uniform film thickness at the recommended spreading rate. The coating should be free from sags, runs or discontinuous areas.

·     Brushing

A selection of brushes is desirable. Large flat ones can be best used for large areas but smaller ones will be required for painting around windows, doors, etc.

·     Roller Coating
Application by roller is a rapid method of coating large flat areas and is particularly suitable for interior work where the slightly texturing effect of the roller is attractive. Brushes will still be required in areas inaccessible to the roller.

·     Conventional and Airless spraying

Generally, spraying is not a suitable method of application internally, because of problems of over spray, adequate ventilation, protection of surfaces not requiring painting etc, all these militate against this method. It is a vet limited application method in large buildings where special effects may be required. Spreading rates of the first coat will vary considerably between softwood and hardwood.

B. PAINTING OF NEW STEEL STRUCTURES

•  SURFACE PREPARATION

•  Power Wire brushing.

This is carried out with a rotary cup brush, the steel bristles of which are sufficiently rigid to remove loose scale and rust. Like hand wire brushing, this method is not effective in removing strongly adherent mill scale or rust. Grease and oil should be removed by solvent cleaning before wire brushing.

• Hand Cleaning

This is used in form of scraping, wire brushing, chipping with hammers or chisels and rubbing down with an abrasive cloth or block.

• Solvent Cleaning

Organic solvent is necessary to remove oil and grease. It will not remove water-soluble salts such as sulphates and chlorides, nor will it remove rust and mill scale.

• Removal or salts and Acidic contaminants

Surface of iron and steel exposed to marine conditions or corrosive industrial conditions, after hand cleaning, should be washed with clean fresh water and dried. Apply to the prepared steel surface suitably primed with Sandtex under coat before application of Sandtex Gloss.

• PREPARATION OF PAINTS

Skin should be removed completely and paint stirred until it is of homogenous consistency.

• WHEATER CONDITIONS

Sandtex Gloss Finish should be applied only when good weather conditions prevail. Ideally, it should not be applied during the following conditions:
At temperatures below 400F or on surfaces registering low temperatures.
-When it is raining or when rain is imminent.
-During foggy or misty condition.
-When the relative humidity of the atmosphere exceeds 85%
-Before dew has evaporated
-Immediately before the possible formation.
